Ruth Magennis
Speech and Language Therapist
BSc (Hons), MHCPC, MRCSLT, MASLTIP
I am a Speech and Language Therapist with over 17 years experience in working with children with a wide range of communication difficulties. I graduated from Newcastle University in 2006, Since then I have worked within the NHS and independent practice. I have worked as a Therapist, a Team Lead and a Clinical Lead for Stammering. I am passionate about supporting children and young people to develop their communication skills to meet their fullest potential, so that they can learn, form friendships and relationships and be confident in their own skills as successful communicators.
I have worked in a range of settings, including Schools for children with Autism, Severe Leaning Difficulties and Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties, a key stage 1 and an early years Special Resource Provision (SRP) for children with language disorders, and in community clinics. I have also worked in mainstream schools, nurseries and children’s centres. I also currently work within the NHS as part of a Social Communication Assessment Team; a multidisciplinary team that works together to diagnose children with Autism.
I am a Mother of 2 boys, which gives me great insight into and understanding of what is really important to parents, which is ultimately is to give our children the best start in life we can; for them to be happy and confident in themselves, I keep this at the heart of my work with families. It also gives me an appreciation of how ‘chaotic’ family life can be and so I work with families flexibly and individually in a way that works for them.
